WINB 15670 kHz Reception in Sardinia, Italy

VOACAP indicates that the WINB datacasting (plus sibling DRM broadcast) signal should be "stronger" along the Mediterranean Sea at around 1500Z.

Here are two logs from a KiwiSDR receiver using a good low noise antenna combo in Sardinia, Italy. The receiver auto-times out after 20 mins hence the two logs.

Sardinia is an island in the Mediterranean which, with its saltwater surrounding, would favour the WINB signal.

The first log shows that the longest drop-out free audio period is about 5 minutes.

The 2nd log shows that at 1529z the Nauen, Germany co-channel transmission of the AWR broadcast to Tibet commences causing severe interference to the WINB signal. The interfering program lasts 30 minutes, at which time Radio France International opens up their 500 kW transmitter on the same frequency and beaming south to Africa!

The Datacasting receivers in Europe probably use high-gain directional antennas with adequate front-to-back ratios that are not as affected by the interference.

The transmitter seems to be fixed, I've just had a snatch of their 15670 kHz signal at 1225 UTC.

Back On

Hi, WINB was on today. They will be off tomorrow as the power company is coming in to make some changes to the service. The station will also be putting in a replacement balun at this time.

The plan is to resume regular transmissions on Wednesday.

I got enough audio from them to finally send them a report, but I was intrigued at the 'shifted PSD' waveform in Dream, which just showed 'half' of the usual waveform, what is the reason for this I wonder?

I'll see if I can hear them on Wednesday, it would be nice to hear them when 'Unique Radio' is on if possible.

Thanks a lot for that Zyg, very interesting, I'd certainly not seen that used on Shortwave before, so at least I now understand what is going on. I normally use my modified NRD-525 with DRM decoder board, but I'll take a look at the waveform more closely on my SDR waterfall when I hear it again.

I've got a copy of the DRM handbook sitting on my Windows desktop, now I'm really going to make an effort to finally get around to reading it! :-)

Hi Alan,

With this WINB datacasting in mind, you might be interested in the following link which is Part 1 of a series of blogs describing the recent use of shortwave radio for high speed financial/commodities trading.
