The reception of the English service in Stockholm is always very poor. DRM Service A (Kuwait) in English logged for 65 minutes from 1808-1912 UTC. Very unstable reception and almost no signal after 1830 UTC. Max. 25 dB SNR and 14.38% decoded audio.

13 Sep 2017 : Radio Kuwait on 15540 kHz from Al Kabd

The transmission disappeared by 19:30 UTC, during this period there was 39% decoded audio.

15:00-18:00 UTC Planetary K-index 1+. Local K-index 2.
18:00-21:00 UTC Planetary K-index 1+. Local K-index 2.

Planetary A-index: 18. Solar flux: 73. EISN Sunspot number: 15.
Sunset 18:22 UTC.

I would be happier if I knew why the reception was so bad, was it propagation conditions or were they running much lower power, you are never quite sure with HF!

Hi Neil,

The answer is time and conditions. Even if propagation was normal the signal starts to decrease in the UK at 1900.

The attached VOAAREA plot (for 1900 UTC September 2017) uses the latest HFCC information which shows R. Kuwait with 250 kW power and a 4/3/0.5 dipole array beaming 310 degrees with a 9 deg slew. I'm assuming that they are running a power of 250 kW analog which is equivalent to 125 kW DRM.

The plot colour code is S7 = pale blue, S8 = pink, S9 = yellow, S9+10 dB = grey and S9+20 dB = white.

It can be seen why Terje has a problem receiving the signal in Stockholm and why Clint does not receive it well in the southern part of Brazil. It does, however, show why Hans in Florida was able to get good decoding.

Hope that helps,

14 Sep 2017 : Radio Kuwait on 15540 kHz from Al Kabd

There was 81% decoded audio during the transmission.

15:00-18:00 UTC Planetary K-index 6-. Local K-index 4.
18:00-21:00 UTC Planetary K-index 5-. Local K-index 5.
21:00-00:00 UTC Planetary K-index 4+. Local K-index 5

Planetary A-index: 15. Solar flux: 73. EISN Sunspot number: 12.
Sunset 18:19 UTC.

Many thanks for the VOACAP plots, I always appreciate them. I can understand why the signal disappears after sunset, the main factor that I could not understand was why the signal was so bad on the 12th September. The reception was even better on the 8th September when there was the radio blackout! Geomagnetic and other solar indeces were similar on both the 12th and 14th September, but there was a hugh difference in the reception of Radio Kuwait on those two days.

My speculation, for what it's worth, is that the main thing that happened on Sept 12 was a coronal mass ejection (CME) that gave a glancing blow to the earth during the broadcast. Conditions were already relatively poor at the time and the CME just made things worse.

This afternoon the signal, here in the Atlanta area, was non-existant for most of the time.

Next month, even with normal propagation, the signal path will not be there for much of the transmission period. I wonder if Radio Kuwait will change frequency?

No signal was received.

15:00-18:00 UTC Planetary K-index 3+. Local K-index 4.
18:00-21:00 UTC Planetary K-index 5+. Local K-index 5.
21:00-00:00 UTC Planetary K-index 5-. Local K-index 4

Planetary A-index: 25. Solar flux: 72. EISN Sunspot number: 13.
Sunset 18:17 UTC.

Thanks Zyg for your theory about propagation on the 12 September, a lower frequency would certainly seem like a good idea for B17.
