Consumer receiver availability

In response to this commentary:
http://www.radionetherlands.nl/featu...int060202.html

and in particular the comment:

"delays in introducing affordable user-friendly receivers are proving to be a major problem, and it's by no means certain that DRM will ever realise its full potential, as in the meantime international broadcasters are dropping significant amounts of short-wave output."

Siriol Evans from the DRM press office has replied at:
http://medianetwork.blogspot.com/
scroll to entries on Friday February 10th.

A further press release from the DRM Consortium on the Le-Radio exhibition starting tomorrow is in DX Listening Digest 6-028 under Conventions and Conferences at:
http://www.w4uvh.net/dxlatest.txt
which will be moved to
http://www.worldofradio.com/dxld6028.txt
when the next issue is published.

Note this on the Roberts radios which will be demonstrated:

Interested consumers will be able to order DRM-capable radios online
in the coming months. Consumers are advised to stay tuned to
http://www.drm.org as well as DRM`s national Web sites including
http://www.drmfrance.com for product availability bulletins and
ordering information.

I maintain you need radios in the shops and regarding Andy Sennitt's comments here's some quotes from my folder of DRM press releases etc:

DRM receivers are expected to be available in shops in 2004. (DRM press release 15.9.2003)

RTL intends to make sure there are two million DRM receivers in Europe by 2007. "This is going to happen," he said. Sony will be producing receivers with both DAB and DRM capability. (Michel Penneroux, DRM Commercial Committee, May 6th 2004, USA DRM group minutes)

"Cheap DRM receivers will be out by Christmas" (Adil Mina, Continental Electronics, May 6th 2004, USA DRM group meeting)

One million DRM receivers are expected to be in the marketplace by 2006.(Peter Senger, US DRM meeting, November 8-12 2004)

DRM capable consumer products are heading for the shops for Christmas 2005. (Peter Senger quoted in DRM press release, 4th September 2005)

The same problem with lack of availability of affordable receivers affected DAB when it first came in and are affecting IBOC. Broadcasters won't make major investments in DRM without them.

DRM receivers are like nuclear fusion :-)

DRM receivers are just like nuclear fusion. Since already 30 years the nuclear fusion will work in about 50 years, that means in 1970 it should work in 2020, in 1990 about 2040 and now in 50 years too. DRM receivers have always been available in about a half year in the future since the first announcements.

That's the end of it.

That's the end of it.

But there is a difference to nuclear fusion reactors: No one has already seen such a reactor, DRM receivers however could be looked at, listened to, smelled, touched, tuned and photographed at IFA in Berlin!

Has anyone else noticed that the module designation in iw0hk's post in this thread was RS-5500, not RS-500, ie a new and more recent version of the module or just a typo by someone?

Think this must have been a mistake.

The RS500 module looks like it will just use a telescopic with an F connector, like for DAB. Hope they will also provide a proper facility to connect an internal ferrite aerial, especially for LW/MW given all the discussion about noise. Can see people being disapointed with the performance if this is not the case.

STARWAVES W37 DRM-DAB-Receiver available

Hi all,
from March 2006 the Starwaves W37 DRM-DAB-receiver is available, here some information from the starwaves website:

"Starwaves W37 is world’s first DRM-DAB-Receiver that you can order.
Since the call of DRM and WORLDDAB towards industry, to produce devices that combines both technologies this unit is the first in the world that takes this requirement."

Datasheets can be downloaded:

in German http://www.starwaves.com/W37DE.pdf

or English http://www.starwaves.com/W37EN.pdf

http://www.radiointel.com/oldnews.htm
for details of their previous Starwaves Prelude, 50 protoypes, price 2003 Euros! No price quoted on their website for the new model and nothing found when I searched at the store they link to.

Nothing found when you type drm in search anyway. Just a re-hash of the IBC with prototypes if so probably. Are you sure there's any DRM 'stuff' at Cebit ?

No, not really. I just seached the list of exhibitors of the Cebit fair which in fact starts tomorrow. No search results neither for "DRM" nor for "Starwaves".

Seems I was mislead by the fact there is a resarch project on local DRM broadcasts in the 11m Band going on in Hannover with test transmissions on 26045 kHz (which I can neither hear nor even "see" in Hamburg, at approx 150 km distance ). The manufacturer Starwaves is involved in the project. So I wonder why they do NOT exhibit anything ?!?
