Mighty KBC

I was listening to the Mighty KBC on 9925 kHz this evening and the signal is always marginal at my location.

I'm ASSUMING that Media Broadcast is carrying the Mighty KBC from Nauen's transmitter. Is the Nauen transmitter capable of DRM? I'm assuming so. If so, it'd probably be capable of targeting the Americas reliably with a MSC of 16 QAM and at least 50 kW in the digital mode. The current azimuth seems satisfactory. The Mighty KBC would be a good candidate for xHE-AAC and a MSC of 16 QAM. The current analog transmission is generally rough indeed to hear at my location. The Mighty KBC would then no longer need to use MFSK.

So you want donations? I have a proposal.

1. Allocate 30 minutes of your weekly broadcast to DRM. You select the content as long as more than 50% is music, the universal language.
2. Use the present configuration except for the following digital requirements:
a. Use 16 QAM modulation for the MSC.
b. Use the xHE-AAC codec
c. Use parametric stereo
d. Use a minimum of 50 kW in the digital mode
3. You are allowed to miss 6 DRM transmissions per YEAR due to technical difficulties, e.g. transmitter failures.
4. A seasonal change of frequency is permitted as long as NO degradation of the strength of the signal occurs at Denver, Colorado versus the current configuration on 9925 kHz.
5. If the aforementioned criteria are met for the YEAR, then I'll donate $100 for that year. I suspect other listeners might join the effort, but I don't speak for them.

You'll need a pioneering spirit to accept such an offer, but rewards are never without risk.

I was listening to the Mighty KBC this weekend again with my GR-216 and recorded the digital transmission of Eisenhower's first color address from the White House in May of 1958...nice, but DRM would be nicer.

Also, I just finished listening to the broadcast of the Indy 500 race on 15760 kHz * and kept musing about the eventuality of using ROBUST DRM there as well. Just imagine the capability of seeing pictures of the cars and other maps as the race progressed.

We'll get there eventually.

* I don't have the time to research who was broadcasting the Indy 500 on 15760 kHz for Advance Auto Parts, but I sure did appreciate it. The broadcaster was probably WHRI. I even recorded the whole race... awesome. Congratulations, Will Power.
